PLACES OF PILGRIMAGE

Pontigny Abbey - Founded in 1114 as the second of the four great daughter houses of Citeaux Abbey and a Cistercian Monastery. The Abbey is located in the commune of Pontigny, on the River Serein.

Paray - It has been an important pilgrim town since the 17th century when Christ made several apparitions to a local nun, Saint Margaret-Mary Alacoque. The Bailica at Paray-le-Monial is a roman style church dating from the 12th century.

Orcival - The story here dates back to the 12th century, when a statue of the Virgim Mary holding the Child Jesus was discovered. It is said that it was carved by Saint Luke. Upon discovery the villagers decided to build a chapel here to house the statue.

Rocamadour -  A clifftop village known for the Cite Religieuse complex of religious buildings that include the Chapelle Notre Dame with its Black Madonna statue and the Romanesque Gothic Basilique Saint Sauveur.
