Espace Bernadette Soubirous
Nevers, a place of pilgrimage and dedicated to Bernadette Soubirous, on Saint Gildard Hill, the Shrine of Bernadette Soubirous has continued to attarct pilgrims from all over the world. A simple country girl from Lourdes claimed that the Virgim Mary appeared 18 times to her. She became a nun at St. Gildard convent and died there in 1879. Her body has lain at the Espace Bernadette Soubirous since 1925.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes
In 1858 Lourdes rose to prominence in France and abroad due to the Marian apparitions seen by the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous. Lourdes is now one of the world's most important sites of pilgrimage and religous tourism. The Santuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is an area of ground surrounding the Catholic Shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes. It includes the Grotto, Holy Water taps, Basilicas and several churches.
PLACES OF PILGRIMAGE
Pontigny Abbey - Founded in 1114 as the second of the four great daughter houses of Citeaux Abbey and a Cistercian Monastery. The Abbey is located in the commune of Pontigny, on the River Serein.
Paray - It has been an important pilgrim town since the 17th century when Christ made several apparitions to a local nun, Saint Margaret-Mary Alacoque. The Bailica at Paray-le-Monial is a roman style church dating from the 12th century.
Orcival - The story here dates back to the 12th century, when a statue of the Virgim Mary holding the Child Jesus was discovered. It is said that it was carved by Saint Luke. Upon discovery the villagers decided to build a chapel here to house the statue.
Rocamadour - A clifftop village known for the Cite Religieuse complex of religious buildings that include the Chapelle Notre Dame with its Black Madonna statue and the Romanesque Gothic Basilique Saint Sauveur.
Mont St. Michael - This is one of Europe's most unforgettable sights. The story of how the mount turned into a great place of Christian pilgrimage is colourful. Aubert, Bishop of Avranches early in the 8th century claimed that the Archangel Michael pressured him to build a church atop the island just out to sea.
Lisieux - For Catholics, Lisieux is synonymous with the young Therese Martin. However, Lisieux has a much longer history, going back to Roman times. Then it became the seat of the Bishops Palace with a cathedral.
Clermont is a university city in central France, near the volcanic Chaine des Puys range. Close to the fountains and statues of sweeping Place de Jaude square are the Gothic Clermont Ferrand Cathedral and the Romanesque Basilica of Notre Dame du Port.
The vibrant university city of Rennes is the administrative capital of Brittany and is worth a day or two of anyone's time. Wander around the medieval streets of the picture perfect old town and admire the impressive parliment building and Thabor gardens.
